The ultimate checklist for a complete spring cleaning!
Here's how to make a fresh start in your home
The most beautiful time of the year is coming: spring! Time for a major spring cleaning. To thoroughly freshen up your entire home in the space of a single weekend.
Why clean in spring? The first reason is that no one wants to do a big cleaning in winter, right? When it's cold and dark, you just want to snuggle up on the sofa. But spring is also the start of hay fever season! Making a good hoover and mop a necessity to get the pollen out of your home. Besides, a spring cleaning is also a good way to reset. Going through your belongings and deciding what you no longer need is good for your mental health. It helps reduce stress. Sorting, throwing away, selling, rearranging: spring cleaning is all about making a fresh start! A fresh start to your spring!
Delightful! But where to begin? How do you tackle a thorough spring cleaning? Which rooms or spots should you definitely not forget? We have a practical checklist for you! So you don’t forget any chores and get to enjoy ticking off every item one by one.
CHECKLIST
1. Be prepared:
- Plan your spring cleaning well in advance to prevent disruptions.
- Save yourself the stress of an overly tight schedule and divide your spring cleaning into several consecutive days.
- Start on the top floor and work your way down room by room > bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room, office and finally the laundry room. Consider every completed room to be ‘out of order’. This will help avoid stuffing it with things from the other rooms.
- Do your chores one at a time and do not try to vacuum the whole house first etc. This often leads to jumping from one task to another, running the risk of forgetting numerous details. Or you get fed up halfway with the whole house in disarray.
- Make sure you have high-quality materials at home: a duster, enough microfibre cloths, products for all surfaces, a hoover, a hand-held hoover for the skirting boards, floor cleaner, mattress cleaner, etc.
2. Follow these steps in each room:
-
Tidy the room and throw away anything you no longer use.
During your big spring cleaning, you always come across clutter and unnecessary items that you no longer need. Sort them into 3 boxes or bags: one for trash, a second one for things you will bring to friends or a thrift shop and a third one for items that belong in another room. Next, use cupboards or boxes to stow away all items that can stay in this room. This will allow you to clean the room in one clean swoop.
-
Make the room dust-free
First, hoover the room. Remove cobwebs, dust everything with a feather duster or duster - from high cabinets to skirting boards. Move the furniture so you can dust every nook and cranny. Use a flexible brush to clean the radiators. Consider things that are easily overlooked such as curtain rods, light switches, sockets and skirting boards.

3. Checklist per room:
In addition to the previous 6 standard steps that apply to every room, we will go over some to-do's for each specific room:
Ο Bedrooms
-
-
Remove and wash all bedding (sheets and pillowcases) and put everything in the washing machine.
-
Hang all pillows and the duvet on the laundry line for a day to air out.
-
Hoover your mattress thoroughly with a mattress hoover. This ensures that your mattress is properly cleaned and all dust mites are removed. Flip the mattress and repeat this step on the side you will sleep on for the next few months.
-
Move the bed and hoover and mop underneath.
-
Remove dust from the bedside tables and other furniture, and check the drawers for any unnecessary clutter! Usually, half of these items can go straight into the bin or back to their original place. Dust off books and remote controls so everything is good to go for a while to come.
-
Don't forget to dust the hoods on the night lamps. A great way to do this is with a clothes roller. It will pick up and retain all the dust effortlessly.
-
Don’t put clean sheets on the bed until the evening, giving the mattress plenty of time to air out.
-
Tip: Invest in a high-quality mattress cleaner:

Ο Bathroom
-
-

-
Clean and disinfect the bathtub and/or shower. Don’t forget about the showerhead and taps. For optimal results with a dismountable showerhead, soak it in vinegar. Other (fixed) taps can be covered with cotton wool soaked in vinegar.
-
Wash bath mats and towels, and add your shower curtain to the washing machine.
-
Remove mould, dirt and limescale from bathroom tiles.
-
Clean shower doors and mirrors.
-
Reorganise your make-up drawer and medicine cabinet: throw away expired or unused make-up and expired medicine. Do you have any nail polish left over that you rarely use? Throw away any nail polish that is nearly finished (you won’t be able to do 10 nails with it anyway) and add a drop of solvent (nail polish remover) to any nail polish that has become syrupy.
-
Clean or replace the bathroom fan if necessary.
-
Ο Toilet
-
-
Since toilets are usually cleaned on a regular basis, they don’t tend to be too much work during the spring cleaning.
-
Ο Kitchen
-
-
Clean your sink thoroughly.
-
Descale electric kitchen appliances (kettle, coffee maker) and taps.
-
Clean the kitchen cabinets, both inside and out. Especially the spice drawer and pantry require a thorough cleaning during this spring cleaning. Check every jar, check the expiration date and wipe it with a damp cloth.
-
Cleaning your extractor hood is undoubtedly a chore you’re not looking forward to. But did you know you can simply stick the filter in the dishwasher? Meanwhile, you can give the rest of the extractor hood and the grille a thorough cleaning.
-
Thoroughly clean the inside and outside of your fridge. Empty the fridge and clean every nook and cranny. Throw away any expired jars and wash the glass shelves and vegetable drawer with soap.
-
You can defrost the freezer and check its contents. Has it been there for more than six months? Out with it! Do you have a ‘No-frost’ freezer? Lucky you, no need to defrost it!
-
The dishwasher gets an extra cleaning as well. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to your dishwasher and run an intensive programme (without dishes in the dishwasher) to clean it thoroughly.
-
Clean the oven if necessary. There are all kinds of special detergents, but a simple lemon and baking soda mixture will do the trick.
-
Give your bin a good cleaning as well and place cotton balls soaked in essential oils inside.
-
Tip: Has your freezer seen better days? Or would you like a more energy-efficient model? Be sure to go for a no-frost freezer to save some work next year while pleasing your wallet:

Ο Dining room & living room

-
Remove the curtains and wash them with a delicate detergent or take them to the dry cleaner.
-
Hoover all sofa covers and cushions. And if your sofa covers are removable, wash them in the washing machine as well.
